Alonso Charged by Football Association

|

As we may have mentioned in our post-match coverage of the victory, against Southampton, at Saint Marys’, we had our fears that Marcos Alonso could be in hot water.

That has proven to be exactly the case.

After making what appeared to be a rash challenge, on Shane Long, Alonso has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association.

Alonso, who clearly caught Long on the back of the calf, has until 18:00 BST on Wednesday to respond to the FA charge.

Previous experience has taught us that Alonso is likely to be given a three-game suspension for his misdemeanour.

If that is the case, Alonso will miss the following games:

• Burnley (a) – Premier League

• Southampton – FA Cup semi-final (Wembley)

and

• Swansea (a) – Premier League

However, whilst accepting that Alonso’s tackle was bad, shouldn’t questions be asked as to how the match officials missed the challenge when they were just a matter of yards away from the incident?
