|

With the FA Cup Final less than two weeks ago, we were hoping that the build-up to what could be an epic encounter with Manchester United, would be all positive.

However, news has broken this evening that two former Chelsea coaches, Gwyn Williams and Graham Rix, are facing new allegations of racially abusing young players in the 1970s 80s and 90’s

The scandal, as broken by the BBC, also reports that Williams and Rix deny

“All and any allegations of racial or other abuse.”

with the club releasing a statement that reads,

“The allegations will be fully investigated. We are absolutely determined to do the right thing, to assist the authorities and any investigations they may carry out, and to fully support those affected which would include counselling for any former player that may need it.”

However, the article also goes on to suggest the claims may open the gates for other accusations in football.

Quite where the club goes from here remains to be seen.

It’s strange that the club now, a totally different club to that of the era the offences allegedly took place, can be held accountable for the reputed actions of two former coaches.
