Last season, 2016 / 2017, the format for the Checkatrade Trophy was changed.

Those in charge of the competition decided to invite clubs with Category A academies to participate.

Chelsea were the only one of the so called big-six clubs to take up the invitation.

Unfortunately, Chelsea`s U21 side didn`t perform as hoped and crashed out of the competition at the group stage.

The final of the competition was won by Coventry, who beat Oxford United in front of 75,000 spectators.

Today the English Football League have announced that Chelsea will once again participate in the competition in the 2017 / 2018 season.

Furthermore, it has been announced that the competition will be boosted by the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City taking part.

However, we should point out that the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool have rejected the chance to take part.

Last season the competition was ridiculed for its low attendances, let`s hope the participation of a few more of the big-six will improve matters.
