Chelsea Interested In Italian Centre Back But, There’s A Big Obstacle In Their Way

|

Apart from the Europa League, Chelsea’s chances of landing some silverware diminished after their Carabao Cup Final defeat, at the hands of Manchester City.

However, you get the feeling, Maurizio Sarri may have engineered himself some more time in the managerial hot-seat, following the performance his side gave.

But whether the Italian will be around when the start of the 2019 / 2020 season commences remains to be seen, such is the fragility of the supporters confidence in their current boss, it could be a case of back to square-one if Chelsea are beaten by Tottenham Hotspur, at Stamford Bridge, on Wednesday evening.

Whilst there may be an element of confusion over who will be in charge next season, it is clear that providing the transfer-ban appeal delays the implantation of the two-window ban, there is an element of rebuilding to be done, with the squad, this summer.

This morning, lurking in the European media and picked up by the local media source, the Manchester Evening News, is the inference that Chelsea are set to go head-to-head, with Manchester United, for a top-class centre back.

The defender in question is Alessio Romagnoil who is currently the captain of the Serie A side, AC Milan side.

But our source is also reporting that Chelsea and Manchester United will also face stiff competition for his signature, if AC Milan decide to sell, from the Italian champions Juventus.

Which brings me nicely back to my opening gambit about winning the Europa League.

If Chelsea are genuine about attracting the likes of Romagnoli to Stamford Bridge, it’s essential that they are able to offer Champions League football, something winning the Europa League, this season would provide.

Otherwise, you get the feeling that when it comes to Romagnoli, it’ll be a straight fight between Juventus and Manchester United with any offer form Chelsea pushed to one side.
