All good things come to an end!
News broke this morning, as reported by the BBC, that somebody who will always have a place in our hearts has decided to retire at the end of the season.
When Petr Cech signed for Chelsea, from Rennes in 2004, the Czech Republic international became the incumbent of our green jersey for many a season.
During his time with Chelsea, Cech went on to keep 228 clean sheets, establishing a club record.
He also went on to win a total of 13 trophies which included four Premier League titles and one Champions League.
Nobody will ever forget his contribution to the cause on that wonderful May night back in 2012, Cech saved a penalty, in extra time, thwarting Arjen Robben, to keep Chelsea in the hunt for their Holy Grail.
His contribution in the resulting penalty shoot-out provided Didier Drogba with the perfect chance to slot home the winning penalty.
But, recalling that monumental night, I’ll never forget the focus in Cech’s eyes, like so many that night he truly believed it was our destiny to lift that huge trophy.
Cech’s Chelsea career ended when Thibaut Courtois claimed the goalkeepers’ shirt but was he ever as good as the Czech, I think not.
Although Cech has been pulling on a shirt bedecked with the Arsenal badge, since 2015, he’s still one of us and I hope you follow me in thanking Petr for everything he achieved with us, the legacy he left us whilst also wishing him well in any roles he sees fit to take, in the game, in the coming years.
