Chelsea Looking To Improve The Defence With An Extravagant Signing

|

Last season, as Chelsea made a poor defence of the Premier League trophy they won in the 2017 / 2018 season, it was noticeable that Antonio Conte chopped and changed the members of the back three.

In the title-winning season, Conte used a settled back three of Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz and Gary Cahill. But, in the summer of 2017, Antonio Rudiger was brought to West London and it was decreed that Andreas Christensen would not be sent out on loan again.

As a result, my feeling is that Conte never really settled on who his preferred defensive trio would be.

Earlier this week, a piece of speculation surfaced, courtesy of the Evening Standard, inferring that Chelsea, along with Tottenham Hotspur, are looking at the possibility of signing the Newcastle United centre-back, Jamaal Lascelles.

At 24-years-of-age, Lascelles has become one of the best young defenders in the Premier League and is valued at a cool £45 million by Newcastle United.

But, if Chelsea are seriously interested in signing Lascelles, would it be money wisely spent?

Is it really the central defence we should be looking at or should we be focussing on other areas of the side?

Personally, I’d stick with any three from Azpilicueta, Cahill, David Luiz, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen and concentrate on somebody to play alongside N’Golo Kante in midfield, as a priority, with our view it was an area of the pitch where we lost several games last season.

Here at Vital Chelsea, we’d be interested to read your views on the subject matter in our comments facility beneath this article.
