Chelsea Set To End Keeper Uncertainty By Forcing The Issue

|

It seems Chelsea’s patience with want-away goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has finally run out and the club is looking to cash in before his contract expires next summer.

Having spent three seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid, the Belgian spent most of last season coveting a move back to the Spanish capital. Should he make that move this summer, there won’t be many tears shed amongst the Chelsea faithful. There is not much worse for a football supporter than a player whose heart is elsewhere.

According to Matt Law in the same article that cites the possibility of Aleksandr Golovin making the switch to SW6, in the Telegraph, he also discusses Courtois’ possible move away and subsequent replacement.

The club is hoping to get offers in excess of £50m for the Belgian and are looking at Roma’s keeper Alisson Becker as his replacement. Roma value the Brazilian number one at around £60m. Should Courtois go and Alisson arrives, the chances are Antonio Conte will, like Courtois also have moved on. His relationship with players of Brazilian descent has been fractious, to say the least during his two-season spell in London. See Diego Costa, Willian, and Kenedy.

Following Liverpool’s defeat at the hands of Real Madrid in the Champions League final and Loris Karius’ two howlers, they inevitably will be monitoring the goalkeeping situation as well and could throw a spanner in the works.

However, the time is right for Courtois to go. Another season of indecision over his future is not acceptable. Roman Abramovich and Marina Granovskaia need to move the Belgian on and replace him as soon as the World Cup is over whatever the cost.
