Back in the summer of 2019, when Chelsea were, courtesy of the FIFA imposed transfer ban, unable to add to their squad, the decision was made to give youth a chance.
Subsequently, we’ve seen the emergence of a core of the team that could serve the club well for many years to come with the likes of Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori, Reece James and Billy Gilmour grabbing their chance with both hands.
Throw into the mix the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Callum Hudson-Odoi and the future, when it comes to youth, certainly seems to be prosperous.
As the season has progressed, the club have acted smartly by ensuring that James, Mount, Tomori, Loftus-Cheek, Hudson-Odoi and Gilmour are all tied to the club on long term deals.
But, one name on our earlier list, that of Tammy Abraham, has still not put pen-to-paper on a new deal.
Abraham, who has finally proven that the #9 shirt isn’t jinxed at Chelsea with so many who have gone before him have failed to hit the net regularly, is, according to The Mirror reluctant to sign a new deal unless he is given salary parity with the top earners at the club.
With 15 goals to his name already this season, Abraham is in a strong bargaining position, but, it remains to be seen whether a deal can be struck in the near future which suits all parties or whether it will drag on to a messy conclusion.
