We always knew that for the EFL Cup quarter-final tie Antonio Conte would make numerous changes.

We also suspected that the boss would give 17-year-old Ethan Ampadu the chance to shine again.

But, what we didn`t expect was to see the Welsh youngster given a place at the heart of the back three, after appearing in midfield in his previous appearance.

However, Ampadu went on to shine that, at just the tender age of seventeen, he is a youngster with a great future.

Ethan went on to produce a performance that belied his young age and was the star of the show at the heart of the Chelsea defence, even shrugging of a very early booking when he caught Jermain Defoe with a bad tackle.

After the final whistle, Antonio Conte had nothing but praise for the talented youngster, enthusing,

“After one minute and 40 seconds the referee decided to book a player who is 17 years old.

Ampadu played the whole game with this problem. That’s not easy. He had to play 93 minutes with this danger, but he showed great maturity and personality.

‘I have spoken about this player before in an enthusiastic way. Despite his young age, he is showing great maturity.

‘He deserved to play tonight, he deserved to play against Everton, he deserved to play his first league game against Huddersfield. Now he has to stay calm. Maybe next game he goes to play for the youth team, I don’t know. This player is very humble. He could have a great future, but he has to continue in this way.’

Have we just witnessed the birth of a new star destined to become a household name?
