Defining A Successful Season

|

Three games into the new Premier League season and all appears well at Chelsea Football Club.

We’ve gathered nine points out of the first nine available and will be looking to keep that 100% record going when we’re visited by AFC Bournemouth, this Saturday.

But, sat at my desk today, waiting for the working day to end, I couldn’t help but wonder how we would define the 2018 / 2019 season when if comes to classifying it as a successful season.

The last two seasons, with Antonio Conte in charge, saw trophies delivered.

In Conte’s first season, the Italian guided us to the Premier League title thereby securing a spot in the Champions League.

In his second season, despite waging war with the club hierarchy, Conte guided Chelsea to the FA Cup, but missed out on a qualification for the Champions League.

Therefore, does that make both seasons a success or was the second, courtesy of a failure to qualify for the Champions League, a failure?

To some, winning silverware in itself defines a successful season but, at Chelsea, things are slightly different.

The need to be in amongst Europe’s elite in the Champions League is all encompassing.

Therefore, returning to the title of this article, how would you define success this season?

Does Maurizio Sarri, in his first season in charge, have to win a trophy or would success be gauged by qualification for the Champions League?

Or, having witnessed a managerial turnover few can match in recent years, are we set to buck the trend and give Sarri, unlike several others who have sat in the hot-seat, a chance to build something long-term and special at this club?

Your thoughts on the subject matter would be most appreciated, please feel free to drop your views into our comments facility beneath this article.
