Last week football lost a player who, like several others, died far too young.

It was a shock to turn on the lap-top and find that the former Newcastle United and Ivory Coast midfielder, Cheick Tiote, had died suddenly.

Yesterday, the legend that is Didier Drogba made his debut for Phoenix Rising, the American club he captains and also part owns.

Drogba helped inspire his side to a 2-1 win over Whitecaps FC II, scoring the opening goal, in the 40th minute and providing an assist for another former Chelsea player, Shaun Wright-Phillips, to score the second.

After the game, Drogba, now 39-years-of-age, dedicated the win to Tiote, remarking on his Instagram site,

‘I want to want dedicate this to Cheick Tiote who passed away doing what he loved.

‘My thoughts and condolences go out to his family, the Ivory Coast and the whole of Africa, mourning the passing of one of their own.’

A classy touch from an honourable gentleman.

RIP – Chieck Tiote
