Chelsea have announced that Gary Cahill will be the team`s captain for the upcoming season. The Official Chelsea Website have an interview with Cahill in which he says

“It`s definitely a proud moment in my career. I`ve had some good moments up until now and this certainly ranks very highly. To be captain of such a huge club like Chelsea is a great personal achievement.”

As has been said many times before on Vital Chelsea, though some still won`t have it, since joining Chelsea the ex-Bolton man has watched, listened and learned from John Terry. You can see it in the way he plays. He led the team last season and fully deserves to do so again during the forthcoming one.

When asked about how important it was to chosen for the role by Antonio Conte, Cahill said

“It`s fantastic when you see the boss has faith in you and trusts you in terms of your character and personality. Ability is one thing, and you could never play for Chelsea without having ability, but the personality and character of a player is vitally important. For him to show that faith in me means a lot. I will fight for the manager and fight for all the players as long as I`m at this club.”

With the arrival of new defenders this summer, there have to be question marks as to whether Cahill will play consistently. You would hope he`ll step up to the plate and prove to be a worthy successor to Terry. I, for one, think he can.

When he`s not playing Conte has gone for someone who really ought to be on the pitch, having played every league game last season Cesar Azpilicueta is Cahill`s deputy.

When asked about Azpilicueta`s appointment, the man with the armband was pleased

“I have a very good relationship with Azpi and that`s important. He`s a top player but his work-rate and character are very strong so he has all the characteristics you would expect from a leader.”

With the Spanish clubs supposedly looking at Azpi as a potential transfer target, Conte`s appointment will hopefully secure his services for the coming season.

John Terry on Instagram has been quick to congratulate his ex-team mate.

Here at Vital Chelsea we would like to wish Gary and Cesar good luck in their new roles, we`re right behind you.
