It`s being reported this evening that the jewel in Chelsea`s crown, Eden Hazard, is close to agreeing a contract extension with the Premier League champions. Hazard`s current deal ends in June 2020, The Express believe Hazard is likely to pocket a sizeable pay increase for additional year at Stamford Bridge.

There has been almost relentless talk of the Belgian being persuaded to move to Spain throughout the transfer window. Most likely destination Real Madrid. The article quotes Hazard speaking earlier in the summer about a possible move to the Bernabeu,

“We all dream. Of course, I would consider it if Madrid made an offer, I am keen to win trophies. It would be great to win the Champions League, but Chelsea`s goal is to win the Champions League as well. Honestly, I do not know what will happen. I only know that I still have a contract with Chelsea for three seasons and that we just had an amazing campaign.”

Hazard, who has been instrumental in Chelsea`s recent successes, is a key member of Antonio Conte`s squad. Having been sidelined with an ankle injury, he is on the brink of returning to full fitness and is in contention for a place in the starting XI against Arsenal on Sunday.

Of course the signing of a new contract is no guarantee that Hazard will remain a Chelsea player but it increases his value, and makes a move away a bit more unlikely. But, as we know, when the ‘big boys` from Spain come calling, the lure for the player can be very difficult to ignore.
