Hazard’s Future At Chelsea Is In The Balance

|

I’ve often remarked that if Chelsea were to sell Eden Hazard they’d be a shadow of the attacking threat they are now.

In past articles, I’ve queried just how far Chelsea would slip down the Premier League if they were to sell Hazard and not invest the huge fee they’d be sure to receive for the Belgian international wisely.

I also may have mentioned that it is essential that Chelsea sit Hazard down and get him to put pen-to-paper on a new contract that would, no doubt, make him the highest paid player in the history of our football club.

But, it appears Hazard is in two minds as to exactly what he wants to do.

In a remarkably honest and frank interview, as reported by the BBC, Hazard has reaffirmed that it is his dream to play for Real Madrid but also admitted he loves life at Stamford Bridge, with Eden quoted as having remarked:

“I don’t want to say, ‘yes, I am signing a new contract’ and then in the end I don’t end up signing.

“I want what’s good for me, but I want what’s good for the club because the club has given me everything.

“So I will see. Sometimes in my head, I wake up in the morning and think I want to go. Sometimes I think I want to stay.

“It is a hard decision. It is my future.”

It is a very hard decision for the 27-year-old to make, he is settled in London, his family enjoy life in London and he’d have to consider if he wanted to swap the relative anonymity of life in this country for one in the high profile capital of Spain.

But, continuing, you get the impression that Hazard is edging towards that dream move when he adds:

“Real Madrid are the best club in the world. I don’t want to lie today. It is my dream since I was a kid. I was dreaming about this club.

“We will see. I don’t want to talk about this every day, I don’t have time. But we will talk about my future soon.”

But, if Hazard were to decide to swap Stamford Bridge for the Bernabeu, how would I feel?

Initially, I’d be absolutely gutted. During my time supporting Chelsea I’ve seen some great players and when it comes to sheer entertainment value, I’d put Eden on a par with the great Gianfranco Zola, I rate him that highly.

But, there comes a time when you have to accept that nothing lasts forever, that players do have ambitions and want to achieve their dreams.

Real Madrid is Eden’s dream, he has a yearning to pull on their famous white shirt and become a legend in Spain, after everything he’s done for us, can we begrudge him his move?

Unlike his compatriot, Thibaut Courtois, Eden is being very upfront with his feelings and that is something that can only be admired.

Perhaps, he will stay at Chelsea, perhaps he will be tempted to sign another new deal if Maurizio Sarri can continue to develop the squad in the manner he has done so far, but you get the feeling it’ll take a Premier League title win this season followed up with some serious intent in the transfer market next summer, aimed at winning the Champions League for a second time, for Hazard to forsake his dream.
