The 5-1 victory over Newcastle should provide the perfect confidence boost ahead of, quite possibly, two of our most important games of the season.

Following the demolition of a poor Newcastle side, Chelsea travel to Paris to take on Paris St Germain on Tuesday evening before welcoming Manchester City to Stamford Bridge next weekend for a 5th round FA Cup tie.

Both those sides are likely to prove to be far more difficult proposition than Newcastle did yesterday.

But, as they say, you can only beat what’s put in front of you and after the emphatic victory, Guus Hiddink had this to say to the media,

‘We can be pleased with the performance of the guys. We tried to surprise them in the beginning. Happily it worked out.

‘It’s important for the way we played, not just in attack. The players also have to do defensive work and that is where we are aiming and then the quality comes out.’

And on facing Paris St German, in the Champions League, on Tuesday, Guus added,

‘We have just two days to recover and it is something to think about in the future because two days of recovery is not enough.’

It’s probably not but we’ll just have to get on with things and do our best against a side that are rampant in the French League and haven’t lost for more than thirty games.
