As next Tuesday draws ever nearer, and a Champions League semi-final first leg starts to dominate our thoughts, the Thibaut Courtois situation continues to generate column inches in the tabloid press.

This morning I stumbled upon an article in one of our tabloid that relates to a claim made in the Spanish newspaper, Marca.

It suggests that Chelsea, under no circumstances, would not be prepared to extend the loan of our young Belgian keeper, to Atletico Madrid, for another season if he faces us in the aforementioned semi-final.

Naturally, with such a scurrilous claim doing the rounds, there has been a quick-fire response from Chelsea Football Club with a Stamford Bridge source stepping forward and remarking,

“We`re absolutely not doing anything of the sort. That would put us in breach of UEFA rules regarding the integrity of the competition.”

“If anyone from Atletico Madrid is making those claims then it is very naughty.”

“The reality is that Thibaut is free to play, he is a member of their squad and we have never asked them anything regarding selection.”

I can`t help thinking that all this smoke is being thrown up to muddy the waters ahead of our forthcoming clash and that, behind the scenes, everything is done and dusted!
