One of my biggest complaints with regards to the Premier League season is the manner in which it is continually interrupted by international breaks.
It is so frustrating that the flow is interrupted just as the interest levels are ramped up.
Okay, I accept that international fixtures such as Euro and World Cup qualifiers have to be played, but it’s so inconvenient.
Yesterday it was announced that from the 2019 / 2020 season there’ll be another rude interruption.
Apparently, we’re going to have what many have yearned for, for years, a winter break.
It has been decreed that the break will be in February and will be staggered across two weeks.
As a consequence, it has also been announced that the 5th round of the FA Cup will be moved to midweek and there will be no replays at that stage of the competition.
The move has been described, by the Football Association as a ‘significant moment for English football’, a moment that ‘will greatly benefit club and country’.
Will it?
Already I can see clubs opting to take sunshine breaks and play a lucrative friendly fixture thousands of miles away from home.
But, looking into my crystal ball, I can’t help but feel the plans will come a cropper when the country, as sometimes happens, will have a bad spell of weather either side of the scheduled break thereby plunging us into a fixture congestion like never before.
