I`m sure you`ll all join me in wishing the Hull City midfielder, Ryan Mason, ever success in what he chooses to do in the future.
Today, it was announced that the player has been forced to retire from the sport, at the tender age of 26, following an injury he picked up in a Premier League fixture against Chelsea.
On 22 January 2017, at Stamford Bridge, there was a sickening clash of heads, totally accidental, between Gary Cahill and Ryan Mason as they both challenged for an aerial ball, in the ensuing minutes, it became clear that whilst Cahill had escaped injury Mason hadn`t been so fortunate.
In the clash, Mason suffered a fractured skull and required eight minutes of on-pitch treatment before he could be carried off the pitch with an oxygen mask attached.
That night, at St Marys Hospital in London, Mason underwent surgery and remained in the hospital for a week, recuperating.
Following the incident, Mason was visited in the aforementioned hospital by Gary Cahill, John Terry and Steve Holland who spoke to his family sharing their concerns.
Despite battling to try and get back to play the game he loves; the medical profession has advised Ryan that a return to professional football is ill-advised.
His club, Hull City, have issued the following statement relating to the announcement,
‘Ryan has sought the guidance of numerous world-renowned neurologists and neuro surgeons, who have all advised that a return to competitive football is not advised.
‘Ryan would like to put on record his thanks to all at the club who have aided his recovery to this point and he is indebted to them for their support and compassion over the past 12 months.’
Once again, our best wishes go to Ryan and we hope he`s a success in whatever he chooses to do next.
