Sarri Waiting For The Chelsea Board To Deliver A Striker

|

A 0-0 draw, at home to Southampton, was hardly the best conclusion to a festive fixture programme that had started so well.

In fact, after taking maximum points from the two away games, against Watford and Crystal Palace, it was, to put it mildly, disappointing to produce a lacklustre display (again), against a side we were expected to beat.

Despite having 72% of the possession, Chelsea couldn’t break the deadlock, and these are worrying times with regards to our home form when you consider we’ve failed to score at Stamford Bridge against Everton, Leicester City and now Southampton in the past few weeks.

But every cloud has a silver lining!

Ahead of the game, against Southampton, Maurizio Sarri had, at his pre-match press conference and as reported by ESPN, dismissed the notion that Chelsea needed to sign a striker, remarking;

“We have Morata and Hazard can play very well in this position as we have seen in the last matches, so I think at the moment I don’t need another striker.

When asked about the possibility of a striking addition with Giroud injured.

But, following the dour performance, Sarri appeared to have changed his mind, with the BBC, reporting that Sarri had remarked:

“I think we played a very good match for 80 metres of the pitch, then we were in trouble in the last 20 metres.

“We have to try to solve the problem of the last 15, 20 metres. The club knows very well my opinion. I think we need something different for characteristics.

“I’m not in charge of the market. I have to try to improve my players, my team, my offensive phase, or better my offensive phase in the last 20 metres.

“The club knows my position, my opinion. It’s up to the board.”

Well, let’s hope the board can deliver because, on the evidence of last night, we’re going to struggle to finish fourth what with Arsenal and Manchester United starting to close the gap.
