The squad numbers for next season were confirmed yesterday and one in particular has given me reason to grimace!

It appears that our loan signing, from AS Monaco, has been given the number 9 shirt.

Now considering that Jose Mourinho is desperate to justify the signing of the Colombian, who struggled to hit the net up at Old Trafford whilst on loan with Manchester United, the decision might well have been taken to steer Falcao away from the 9 shirt, a shirt that hasn`t seen it`s recent occupants enjoy much luck.

If we look at who has worn the reference shirt in recent times, you might get the gist of what I`m on about!

? Fernando Torres
? Franco Di Santo
? Mateja Kezman
? Hernan Crespo

and

? Khalid Boulahrouz

Have all worn the shirt and out of the above, maybe controversially, I`d suggest that only Hernan Crespo did anything like live up to his reputation but off-the-field incidents hampered his stay in the United Kingdom. Also, out of the five listed, one was a midfielder and one was a defender who many recall was turned inside out by Aaron Lennon at White Hart Lane but marked Ronaldinho out of the game on another occasion.

In fact if you are looking for the name of somebody that has starred in the number 9 shirt for Chelsea in the Premier League, two names spring to mind:-

? Gianluca Vialli

and

? Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

The former endured a stuttering start to his Chelsea career under Ruud Gullit but recovered to leave some kind of legacy, first as a striker and then as a manager.

But you can head back further into the history books and stumble across names such as;-

? Chris Sutton
? Robert Fleck
? Tony Cascarino

and

? Mark Stein

With only the later enjoying fleeting glimpses of what we expect from a Chelsea number 9

So with Radamel Falcao having been handed the number 9 shirt, can we hope that he joins a list of those who have done it justice, illustrious names like:-

? Peter Osgood
? Kerry Dixon

and

? Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

Or is it just cursed?
