Southampton v Chelsea – Match Day Moments

|

This Saturday lunchtime, Chelsea are in action, down on the south coast, when they take on Southampton in a Premier League fixture.

Thomas Tuchel will be hoping that his side can continue their fine run of form, since the German took over, which has seen his side win 5 out of the 6 games his side have played and drawn the other one.

Southampton is always a difficult place to visit but our hosts are on a poor run of form which has seen them lose their last 6 Premier League games.

As is the norm we are inviting you to participate in our Match Day Moments feature where we ask you to comment on a variety of subjects including, but not limited to:

1 – The build up to this crucial fixture.

2– The starting XI selected by Thomas Tuchel.

3 – The action as it happens down at the St Marys’ Stadium.

4 – Your thoughts in the immediate period following the sounding of the final whistle.

Let us hope Tuchel can steer us to another three points and cement our claims for a top-four finish.

    1-1 ….. Our momentum halted 🙁

Bad decision to replace CHO …. he could have made the difference in the last 15 min …. but more than that, i feel we need a better centre forward than Tammy & OG to really challenge for thropies

You were spot on with your comment on needing world class strikers up front if we really want to challenge for trophies. Someone who can get 20-25 goals a season and score regularly.
In the same vein we need quality in other positions too to make the squad more competitive and adequately stocked in the event of injuries.

You can’t possibly conclude the reasons for taking out CHO. It could be an injury, a tactical tweak or simply because Odoi didn’t play as instructed

The First half we played poorly, dominating possession without doing anything meaningful with it. We were too slow to transition play from defence to midfield and from the midfield to the final third.
Despite the improvements in the other half, I still hold the opinion that Mason Mount should be played deeper alongside either of Kovacic or Jorginho. I’m not trying to berate his performance as he was our best player in the second half, but we needed someone to unlock stubborn defences with dynamic passing ranges from the attacking midfield area into the opposition box or out wide. We have Kovacic who can carry the ball from deep but his final pass is a disaster. The ones we have for that particular job are Ziyech and Kai but for reasons best known to him, I don’t think the gaffer see them in that position

Today’s result does felt like a defeat but every good run will end somewhere along the way but we could have prevented that by being positive from the off. Personally I think the manager was partly at fault for not tweaking the formation a bit. We’ve been playing 3-4-3 since he came on board and he should’ve known that other managers will devise a means to beat that. This current formation is very good defensively as we have conceded the fewest goals in recent time. The downside to that is that we are creating less chances and are not scoring enough goals. Tuchel is doing a good job right now but the stakes will be higher next season and the pressure will heat up more
