Spurs Should Have Been Shown TWO Red-Cards

Not my view but that of a respected former official.

Fixtures between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur always have a feisty edge to them.

Who`ll ever forget the so-called ‘Battle of the Bridge` back in the 2015 / 2016 season, where mayhem might be an apt word to use to describe what happened on the pitch when it came to fair play going completely out of the window.

However, whilst the game yesterday (Sunday), didn`t hit those lows, there were a couple of incidents that took place whereby Chelsea got the rough end of the deal.

There were a couple of tackles, namely one made by Erik Lamela on Cesc Fabregas and another made by Jan Vertonghen on Eden Hazard, that could have tipped the balance of play in our favour.

Indeed, with VAR available next season, the former referees` chief, Keith Hackett, is of the opinion that Spurs, courtesy of VAR replays, could have been reduced to nine-men.

Talking to the news source, The Telegraph, Hackett is quoted as remarking,

“Their challenges, on Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard respectively, were clearly reckless with excessive force. They were dangerous and could have caused serious injury, and there is no question in my mind that both were beyond the threshold required to issue a red card.

“Andre Marriner, the referee, will be disappointed he and his assistants did not see the incidents and deal with them correctly, and they were the only blots on what I felt was otherwise an expertly-refereed game.

“I watched the game on television and within one or two replays it was obvious how bad the challenges were, and they are the type of incidents I feel VAR will help to resolve in the future.”

Hackett is, in our opinion, quite right.

Sour grapes on our behalf, or a quest for justice and fair play, you decide.
