Back in the dying embers of last season, Antonio Conte’s last in charge of Chelsea and a season that saw Chelsea win the FA Cup Final, speculation was rife that Thibaut Courtois would leave Chelsea Football Club in the summer.
The Belgian international goalkeeper had ambitions of playing for Real Madrid and added the fact that he wanted a return to the Spanish capital to be closer to his partner and children.
Courtois, as many suspected he would, got his dream move resulting in Chelsea having to seek a replacement and signing Kepa for a world record fee for a goalkeeper.
But, since joining Real Madrid, not all has gone to plan for Courtois.
Returning to Madrid, to play for Real, upset the Atletico fans who worshipped him and their feelings were made common knowledge by the utilisation of plastic rats.
On the pitch, Courtois has struggled to live up to his reputation as Real Madrid’s season disintegrated and culminating in the recent appointment of Zinedine Zidane to stop the rot.
Naturally, in such a city where those that play for such a high-profile club as Real Madrid, it is like living in a goldfish bowl with the players under intense scrutiny.
As a result, the Madrid press have given Courtois a hard-time with the news source, the Independent, reporting that Courtois dad has accused the media of bullying his son.
Now that may be the case, but at 26-years-of-age Courtois should be old enough and ugly enough to fend for himself.
Besides, he knew the score when he joined Real Madrid, he knew the pressure you live under as part of the circus that is Real Madrid.
But, then again, stating that you needed to return to Madrid to be nearer your partner and children and then leaving her to start a relationship with another woman might not have helped.
Now I’m not a vindictive person but in this instance and considering the manner in which he engineered his move away from Stamford Bridge, the word KARMA does spring to mind!
