Time To Sell In Order to Spend

This summer could prove to be an interesting one when it comes to the transfer market.

There’s no denying that Chelsea have fallen well short, this season when it comes to defending the Premier League title they won in 2016 / 2017.

Friction behind the scenes leaves us with a scenario whereby we’re unsure who’ll be in charge next season, whether Antonio Conte will still be in the dug-out or there’ll be net another manager pulling the strings.

But, when it comes to the transfer market, Chelsea’s position could be weakened by the fact our participation in the Champions League is likely to be curtailed due to us not finishing in the top-four this season.

Today, a piece of speculation relating to the Manchester United forward, Anthony Martial, has reared its head again.

According to the Telegraph Chelsea would be interested in buying the 22-year-old forward if his situation at Old Trafford doesn’t improve.

Since Jose Mourinho acquired the services of Alexis Sanchez, from Arsenal, Martial has fallen down the pecking order and wants assurances that he will get more opportunities to start, for Manchester United.

But, Martial won’t come cheap and with Chelsea’s budget likely to have a £50 – £70 million shortfall, courtesy of not qualifying for the 2018 / 2019 Champions League, and also with the Financial Fair Play Regulations to be abided by, some financial juggling may be prudent.

Our source goes on to suggest that now could be the time to cash in on the plethora of players the club has out on loan, to free up enough cash to revitalise the side.

To be brutally honest, there are numerous players out on loan who are not going to feature in the Chelsea first team on a regular basis, two that immediately spring to mind being Tomas Kalas and Lucas Piazon who are both on season-long loan deals at our neighbours, Fulham.

So, has the time come to reduce the quantity of players in the squad and improve the quality so that Chelsea can acquire players of the likes of Anthony Marital and any others we’ll be linked with this summer?
