A former servant of Chelsea Football Club passed away yesterday.

After a long illness Tony Hateley passed away aged 72.

Hateley was signed by Tommy Docherty back in October 1966 for a fee of £100,000 from Aston Villa.

At that time the fee paid to Villa was a club record and Hateley was perceived as a replacement for the legend that is Peter Osgood, who was side-lined with a broken leg.

The tall striker played 33 times for Chelsea scoring 9 goals before he was sold to Liverpool for £96,000.

Our deepest sympathies and condolences go to his family and friends.

RIP Tony.
