Italian federation vice-commissioner Alessandro Costacurta has been backtracking regarding comments he`s made about Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.

We`re led to believe that Conte is having a bad time at Chelsea this season, but the boss has said he intends to see out his current contract, keeping him at the club until the end of next season.

Costacurta was quoted as saying that Conte was the number one choice for the role of Italy`s next manager. With the Conte currently in gameful employment, the vice-commissioner`s words could be seen as inappropriate, something he`s now denied saying according to France 24,

`I never said I preferred Conte over everyone`, I just said that having already worked with the national team, he has the right qualifications and he did well. Apart from the fact that there are not very many great talents available, we still need a good coach and the names being discussed are all good coaches.”

Costacurta has put a timescale on an appointment and given the names of three candidates.

`We plan on appointing the new coach by June. Conte, Mancini or Di Biagio? These are the names, it won’t be anyone else.’

Ex-Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is currently head coach Zenit St Petersburg. Luigi Di Baggio is the Italy U21 manager and has been appointed as Italy`s interim head coach for the upcoming friendlies against Argentina and England.
