With Joe Cole having been granted a place in the squad of 23 selected by Fabio Capello for the World Cup in a little over ten days time, it completes a journey for Joe.
Having suffered that awful knee ligament injury, in the FA Cup tie against Southend, its been a long and often uncomfortable road back for a player blessed with an abundance of skill.
At times Joe must have thought he`d never be ready in time for the South Africa World Cup but, as fate would have it, his return to Premier League action, allied with the fact he`s amongst the freshest in the England squad, were probably his trump cards.
His selection will, no doubt, go down well with his Chelsea team mates with John Terry having remarked before the confirmation of Joe`s selection was broken to the media,
“Towards the end of the season when we`ve needed big players, Joe Cole has been one of them at Chelsea.”
“Joe scored a massive goal at Old Trafford, he did really well, the manager (Capello) will make that final decision, he`s seen enough of Joe, what he`s done in the last 10 days and against Japan to know what he can do.”
“But it was interesting to see Joe play in behind Wayne as well. He caused a lot of problems and speaking from a defenders point of view, it` shard to know whether to go with him, stay tight or try him have the ball.”
“If you let him have the ball then he can cause problems. He can see passes too; look at the through ball for Ashley Cole. He made a big impact against Japan.”
It`ll see kind of strange watching Joe perform on the greatest international stage there is but sort of suspecting we`ll probably not see him wearing a Chelsea shirt again!
