Chopper Returns to Old Trafford

Old Trafford on Saturday saw one of our all time heroes return to a ground that must hold marvellous memories for him.

Milling around outside trying to kill time before entering the stadium, our motley crew were assembled at the base of the stairway that led down to the West Stand entrances. With various acquaintances arriving it seemed an ideal place to congregate.

Stood next to the cfcuk fanzine seller, the atmosphere was, as should be expected, jovial. With banter being exchanged in a light-hearted fashion, I almost missed the unmistakable figure of a Chelsea legend shuffling his way down the steps.

Surrounded by well wishers, any hopes that Ron Harris had of silently slipping into Old Trafford were well and truly blown away. Instead, Ron took time out to chat to several supporters eager to be seen to be talking to our legendary skipper.

Indeed, I?ve no doubt that the topics of conversation covered included that monumental night, back in 1970 when Chopper became the first skipper in Chelsea?s history to lift the FA Cup.

Although the ground may have changed considerably I?m sure that, if he closed his eyes, Ron can still visualise scenes from a night that will always be remembered fondly by the Chelsea faithful.

We might not have got the result we wanted on Saturday but it?s still heart-warming to see those that played a part in our illustrious past still showing the same passion for the club now as when they were playing.
