FA Cup Semi Final – Chelsea 2 Southampton 0 – Giroud On A Crest of a Wave

|

After Chelsea signed Olivier Giroud, from Arsenal, in the last knockings of the January transfer window, it seemed a strange buy.

Even more so when the Frenchman didn’t appear to be getting regular football and was often sat on the bench watching his team-mates.

Several pundits, including myself, began to question why Chelsea bought the player.

But the last week or so has seen Giroud spring to prominence.

Last weekend, he helped Chelsea come back from the dead in the Premier League game against Southampton, scoring a brace, as Chelsea came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

At Turf Moor, in midweek against Burnley, he showed that he was more than capable of playing, if the need arose, alongside Alvaro Morata.

Today, at Wembley, against Southampton in the FA Cup semi-final, Giroud once again got on the score-sheet giving Chelsea the lead, with an audacious piece of footwork.

Following the semi-final win, a victory that sets up a tantalising FA Cup Final against Manchester United, Olivier had this to say to the BBC

“We played a good first half but couldn’t finish the job and put it in the back of the net. The boss told us ‘keep going, play your game and it’s going to happen’.

“Eden gave me a good ball so I wanted to try something, I could see the defenders, it was lucky but yes it’s what I wanted to do.”

“I said to the boys I really want to win another FA Cup with Chelsea, that’s the target. We want to win this trophy, it’s a special competition and for me as well. We will look forward for this amazing final.”

I have to admit I’ve never been so pleased to have been so wrong when it comes to judging a player.

Now, let’s hope Bakayoko can do the same!
