Jorginho Is A Great Acquisition But………..

|

It’s always disappointing when Chelsea fail to get a result against West Ham United.

The rivalry between the two sets of fans runs deep and following the 0-0 draw, on Sunday, Chelsea have, surprisingly, failed to beat West Ham United in each of the last three consecutive Premier League games.

However, on Sunday, it wasn’t for want of trying with Chelsea probing away but not being able to breach a resolute Hammers rear-guard.

During the game, Chelsea’s summer signing, Jorginho, attempted 18 passes in the match, a figure not reached by any other player since the 2003 / 2004 season.

Continuing on the same theme, it turns out that Jorginho has completed a colossal 628 passes in the Premier League for Chelsea this season, more than any other player.

But one thing continues to worry me.

Watching the ‘new’ Chelsea, under Maurizio Sarri, very few of those passes from Jorginho are defence-splitting balls, most tend to be short balls to team-mates or balls just to keep the play moving.

As a result of Jorginho’s role in the team we find N’Golo Kante played in a more forward position, a position where, in my opinion, he looks out of place. Against West Ham, on two occasions, we found Kante in advanced positions where he could have put Chelsea ahead.

But although the Frenchman is brilliant at what he does, his goal-scoring prowess isn’t one of his stronger traits.

Which brings me to ask the question:
