Often, tabloid headlines are produced to gain maximum effect and maximum exposure. Sometimes they simply state the truth however unpalatable it may be.
Today, on the eve of the Holland v England fixture in Amsterdam, Marco van Basten has according to one leading tabloid, during the pre-match build up, stated that Arjen Robben will be a become a better player than Wayne Rooney. Or has he?
Obviously, van Basten, who enjoyed a great career as a player, is entitled to his opinion quoting,
“Arjen has everything in his game.”
“He has great touch, control, dribbling ability and can score great goals too.”
“I would put him above other players because of his potential. He can get even better and can help this young team get better and win prizes over the next few years.”
“We have a very talented team and there is no doubt in my mind that Arjen can prove himself on the biggest stage.”
However, you`ll notice that nowhere within the comments, attributed to van Basten, is a direct reference to Wayne Rooney, only the term “others” is used.
Therefore, one can only surmise that the name of Rooney has been added to the script by the tabloids to gain maximum impact, maximum exposure and directly stoke up enthusiasm ahead of the fixture between the two respective countries tonight.
It`s amazing what a decent headline can do!
Hence our rather over the top headline for this article!
Mind you, we`d willingly argue until we`re blue in the face that Robben is of sounder mind than Rooney. Surely the fact he signed for Chelsea rather than Manchester United is ample proof of that!
