Earlier today reports coming out of Italy were suggesting that former Bayern Munich boss and one of Chelsea`s most popular former managers, Carlo Ancelotti, was looking to take a 10 month sabbatical from football. Given the recent speculation regarding Antonio Conte`s tenure in charge at Stamford Bridge, and the prospect of him leaving London at the end of the season, it`s only natural to add two and two and make four.

The whole Conte out, Ancelotti in prospect was discussed on Sky Sports Sunday Supplement, the debating show which features journalists discussing the weekend`s football, focused on Chelsea following their defeat against Manchester City. To be fair though, with Chelsea`s recent history regarding the quick turnaround in managers and their propensity to re-employ former bosses, see Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink, it`s by no means unlikely. In fact it probably makes perfect sense.

In the televised debate, some of which is outlined in the Sky Sports article, one of the guests Sam Wallace of The Telegraph believed the hierarchy at Chelsea were not altogether happy with Ancelotti`s departure back in 2011. He was sacked within two hours of a 1-0 defeat at Everton, after the final game of the 2010-2011 season. The Blues finished 2nd in the Premier League.

Ancelotti was a popular figure at Chelsea. In his first season at the club, they won their first and only league and FA Cup double. Although the FA Cup is becoming devalued, victory in it, along with the league title is still the true benchmark of a successful season. His League stats were good too, a win percentage of 63.2% is right up there in managerial terms.

Should Ancelotti end up back in the Chelsea hot seat next season, there won`t be too many complaints from the faithful, after all, nothing that happens at Chelsea when it comes to managers will ever come as a surprise.
