Indeed, it would appear that any rumours that have surfaced today appear to be founded upon the suggestion that Robert Huth may well be leaving Chelsea to ensure selection for the German national team for the 2006 World Cup.

Robert, is highly respected by the German coach, Jurgen Klinsman, who recently stated on Chelsea TV that he has his eyes on six central defenders for the four positions available in his World Cup squad.

With Robert having performed admirably in the recent Confederations Cup, Jurgen is keen to ensure his progress is maintained. In the same interview, Jurgen initially suggested that Roberts inactivity, with regard to the first team, wouldn’t affect his chances of being selected.

Indeed, it was even suggested that this inactivity could result in Robert being fresh when the World Cup comes around in June 2006. Unfortunately, as the interview petered out, Jurgen somewhat contradicted this initial suggestion.

Therefore, the media seem intent on pushing along the suggestion that when the transfer window arrives in January, young Robert could be either loaned out or sold. Already, potential destinations have been suggested with Aston Villa, Newcastle, Bayern Munich and several other Bundesliga teams entering the frame.

Naturally, if such rumours are to be substantiated then there is also the necessity to promote a counter rumour, after all, Mourinho has often quoted the need to have four world class centre backs. It would appear that this is how the rumour that Tal Ben Haim is a top target has been formulated.

The Bolton Wanderers defender has made a dramatic impact since being signed from Maccabi Tel Aviv and the Israeli is definitely a class act. According to the leading tabloids a fee in the region of £5 million has also been mentioned.

However, it should be pointed out that Bolton are insisting no contact has been made with Chelsea regarding a potential deal and that, according to Sam Allardyce, the player is not for sale. more importantly, Robert’s own agent has re-iterated that the popular young German is happy at Chelsea and has no intentions of leaving.

Methinks this is the kind of rumour that’ll disappear before the end of the week and probably re-emerge as a column inch filler sometime after the festive period.
