With the African Nations Cup about to finally get underway, one of its leading lights, Didier Drogba, has once again been talking to the press.

With his future at Chelsea still unknown, Drogba, on this occasion, has spoken out about a subject close to his heart, that of racism.

However, in true Drogba style, he seems to have gone off on a slight tangent and not concentrated on the issue in hand, that of the racial abuse that is rife in some parts of Europe but instead concentrated on money.

Here`s what he had to say,

“To be an African player is not an advantage. A French international or an Ivory Coast international has totally different status.”

“An African of equal value will earn less than a European. We don`t start on a level footing. When you talk to a sponsor about a contract or with a club, they say to you – “That is the way it is”.

“If you were in the France team, the negotiation would be pushed further and in the end you would earn a lot more money. Let`s stop the lie.”

He may well have a point, but I can`t help but feel he`d have been better off focussing on the abuse received on some parts of the continent.

Or perhaps a totally off the wall suggestion, is Drogba simply miffed that some of his salary will have to be handed over to pay the fine he collected in Guildford Magistrates Court for speeding yesterday!
