At 09:30 this morning, Andres Villas-Boas charmed those in attendance at his first press conference since being unveiled as the successor to Carlo Ancelotti as the manager of Chelsea Football Club.

Talking about a variety of subjects, Andre gave an indication of how he`d like to see Chelsea perform, remarking,

“It`s not just about winning, but winning with a certain amount of flair. Everyone likes attacking football.”

“The Premier League has a certain amount of goals in every game and it should be an entertaining game for the fans and that is what we will look to do.”

Words that, we imagine, would have had Roman Abramovich nodding in agreement as they seem to fulfill, perfectly, the wishes of our owner.

Continuing, Andre also spoke about the immediate pressure placed on his shoulders and the expectation levels he`s acutely aware of, commenting,

“The expectations are for the maximum. We want to win trophies; that is the challenge we face day by day in any business.”

“Everyone wants to be the best and win something and the challenge is to win as soon as possible and build a platform for the future.”

Being churlish we could point out that Andre`s words echo those of the last Portuguese inhabitant of the managerial chair, who saw his team win the Carling Cup in his first year, a victory he went on to claim installed a winning mentality to the squad.

Naturally, questions about being compared to the ‘Special One` were brought into the conversation, with Andre being very forthright about his role at Chelsea Football Club, confirming,

“This is not a one-man show; this is about creating empathy, ambition and motivation in everybody.”

“I am just one guy in this big club. Maybe I should be called ‘The Group One`. I want group people to be successful.”

“It`s not a question of me taking on Sir Alex Ferguson or other Premier League managers, it`s about a top club like Chelsea challenging for the title.”

Andre also seemed prepared to face up to the heavy initial pressure he will come under from the media but looking to quell those early doubts by stating,

“We need to be up there from the beginning: it`s about trying to build something that can make us powerful, and help us threaten for the title as we have in the past.”

Interesting times ahead we suggest!
