Torres did not call his team-mates ‘old and slow’

It was an entirely unnecessary (and somewhat malicious controversy over what Fernando Torres did or did not say about his team-mates. The headlines in the UK suggested that Torres had criticised the Chelsea players as being old and very slow. In fact, Torres said nothing of the kind.

The actual interview was broadcast on the website of the Spanish League, and was a discussion mostly about the Spanish national team. When asked about the arrival of Juan Mata, Torres hailed his Spanish national team-mate as a ‘great signing`. “He`s a player who brings a different speed to the game, something that today`s Chelsea is lacking.” That is the exact translation of his words.
