It`s got to be a first hasn`t it?

I can`t recall any footballer retiring from the game and then not only entering politics but also becoming the president of their country.

But that is exactly what has happened to George Weah.

Weah spent the second half of the 1999 / 2000 season with Chelsea Football Club, on loan, famously scoring on his debut against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.

After Weah retired from the game in 2003, he entered politics and has been serving as a senator in Liberia`s parliament.

Running for the presidency of Liberia, Weah polled 61.5% of the 98.1% of the ballots counted and was declared the president of Liberia.

Weah succeeds the current president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who was the country`s first elected female president.

Our congratulations go to George on his success and I guess the next time we see him in this country it could be on a state visit.
