What Does Roman Want?

We have for years had to endure the tabloid version of what Roman wants. I think it is time to challenge that.

Almost every Chelsea fan, as any English football fan, favours winning the Premier League as the biggest trophy haul of a season. It shows all what a team is about. Thirty eight rough, tough games in which there is absolutely nothing given away for free. But during that gruelling play schedule bad luck, good luck and incompetence evens out. We might even have some luck with a benevolent referee. Not even Gerrard MoTM gets away with every dive he takes.

The players feel exactly the same. See what Frank Lampard says, well just every single one of the best squad in football says the same thing. It is the Premier League that counts.

Still the media, and not only in England act like the only trophy that counts for Chelsea is the Champions League. Or for anyone in football. It is not true. Champions League is fun, interesting and kind of a lottery.

Yes, we have yet to win it, but it is only a matter of time and some luck. How many Tom Henning Øvrebø can there be out there? How many more times can we be drawn against the worst opposition and the toughest teams in every round of the play offs? Can there be more loose grass turfs to slip on in final games?

Of course we will win it, sooner or later. I think this year. With just a sliver of the luck Barcelona had we will win it convincingly and easily.

Not that the media cares, when it comes to Chelsea there is a mantra. Roman wants to win the Champions League. Because he fell in love with football watching Man U playing in the Champions League.

We, that know something about Chelsea, not the media – know that Roman`s knowledge of football is far superior to the general image the tabloids spew over us. We also know that he did not find football like a holy grail at that moment at Old Trafford. He loved football long before, even as a kid growing up in the Ukraine. What happened at Old Trafford is that he maybe realised that spending some of his billions on owning a football club was a fun thing to do. And how has he not shown his love for football and Chelsea in particular since then. (Including everything he has done for Russian football, which is almost as much as for Chelsea).

Still I think even us fans have bought into the tabloid version. That Roman wants the Champions League the most.

I have started to question that. Roman himself has never ever said anything about it.

Of course he wants to win the Champions League we all do. After all, it is the only trophy of importance we never have won, despite being closer than any other team for six years soon. We want it.

But does Roman want it even more than winning the Premier League. I do not take that for granted any longer!

I think Roman feels exactly like me. He wants the Premier League title and the Champions League.
