After scoring twice against Spurs, in the reciprocating fixture at Wembley, earlier in the season, Marcos Alonso could have added to his tally today.

But, like so many others in blue shirts today, the attacking full-back had an off day.

After hitting the net but being pulled back for offside, Alonso then appeared to have his boots on the wrong feet, fluffing several chances that came his way.

After the game though, speaking to the Match of the Day team, Alonso gave an honest assessment of the state of the nation, remarking,

“Today was a must-win and we are very disappointed. We have to fight to the end and see what happens.

‘I don`t think we played a bad game. We had many more chances but we didn`t concentrate for the 90 minutes. In a game of this importance we can`t give away three goals.

‘I don`t think we have had the same luck as last year. Other teams have improved and we don`t have the consistency. It is what it is. We have to stand up now and fight until the end.

‘Winning the last seven games has to be the target and we have to wait for others to lose.’

Personally, I`m of the opinion that you make your own luck in this world, I further believe that this season has proven we`re just not good enough and there are things behind the scene that belie our prospects of returning to the lofty heights we once occupied.
