How serious Chelsea`s interest in the Dutch defender, Virgil van Dijk, really is, is hard to gauge.
With Andreas Christensen showing that Chelsea do have strength in depth at the heart of the defence, do Chelsea even really need the Southampton centre-back?
It`s an interesting question when you consider that previous speculation has insisted that Southampton would require a world record fee for a defender if they were to sell.
Suspicions relating to the seriousness of Chelsea`s intent to sign the player are further heightened by something that has appeared in the pages of a respectable media source this morning.
The good folk of the The Telegraph are running with the suggestion that Chelsea will only make a bid for the centre-back if they get the go-ahead from Southampton.
If Chelsea`s intentions were serious and with the summer transfer window closing in ten days` time, you`d have thought Chelsea would be hammering on the door at the St Marys` Stadium trying to get the deal done.
To me, this one seems all a little bit strange.
