Can lightning strike twice or is a third major knee injury a real cause for serious concern?
The news that broke yesterday that Michael Essien would be out for six months, although sad, wasn`t entirely unexpected.
Having undergone an operation to repair the damage sustained during pre-season, Michael faces that long road back to full fitness that professional athletes hate.
Haunted by hours of solitude going through rehabilitation exercises is always a test of ones inner spirit.
But Michael has done it before, twice, and who`s to say that he can`t do it a third time.
I can recall a similar time when Essien was out with a serious knee injury; his return coincided with an FA Cup trip to Coventry. Thrust on as a substitute Michael was given a rousing reception by the travelling support.
That year, under Guus Hiddink, Chelsea went on to lift the FA Cup, could lightning strike twice, could Essien return to provide the impetus required, as the season draws to a close, to give Andre Villas-Boas his first trophy?
It`d be nice wouldn`t it!
