Petr Cech, the Chelsea goalkeeper, will be out of action for three or four weeks after damaging knee ligaments in training this week.

The Czech Republic international will miss the visit of West Brom to Stamford Bridge on Saturday, the home game against Norwich City and probably the trip to Sunderland, and will face a race against time to be fit for the visit to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on 18th September.

Andre Villas-Boas, speaking in his pre-match press conference today, revealed that his goalkeeper had damaged medial ligaments in his right knee after landing badly after a challenge with a team mate.

‘He fell awkwardly with weight on top of him, and he stretched a little bit a medial knee ligament,’ reported Villas-Boas. ‘We expected much worse when we saw the incident. The good news is that it is just for three to four weeks.’

Henrique Hilario sat on the bench last weekend at Stoke and looks likely to be given the job between the sticks on Saturday, although Villas-Boas insisted he would wait until tomorrow before making that decision.

‘We have two goalkeepers,’ he said, ‘Hilario and Ross Turnbull, and tomorrow we will make a decision which one will start and which one will be on the bench.’
