After the farcical situation relating to the England captaincy, ahead of the day of the game, Ashley Cole did lead England out last night, against the Republic of Ireland.

Cole, resplendent in the new England kit and captains armband, was presented with a golden cap, to mark his 100th England appearance prior to the game.

Ashley got a marvelous reception from the Wembley crowd for his achievement and almost marked the occasion with his first goal for England with Cole remarking about this and his personal milestone after the match,

“I thought I was going to score for England at last.”

“It was a great ball from Wayne, a good cross from Theo and I tried my luck. My eyes lit up when the ball came over but it was not to be.”

“Where does this rank in my career? I`d probably say #1. I never expected to get 100 caps and the reception I got was magnificent, it`s a moment I`ll never forget. It`s a little boys dream come true.”

“It was in my mind that I wanted to be captain. I don`t really like speaking to the press but I was happy to lead the side in this game. It was amazing.”

“I think we should have won but it was a great atmosphere and a great night for me.”

Just a shame the result didn`t go England`s way!
