Italian Seeks Chelsea Exit After That Heroic Night In Baku And I’m Left With Mixed Emotions And A Slice Of Humble Pie

|

A matter of days after steering Chelsea to European glory with a fine 4-1 win, in Baku, against Arsenal in the Europa League Final, it appears that Maurizio Sarri’s tenure as the Chelsea manager could be over after just one season.

The media is alive with the suggestion that the speculation linking Sarri with the Juventus post is more than just the usual tittle-tattle.

Illustrating this point perfectly are the following three reports, the first of which comes courtesy of the news source, Goal which quite emphatically states that Sarri has asked Chelsea to release him from his current contract as he has already agreed to join the Serie A title winners.

Continuing on the same theme, the second report, courtesy of the Italian news source, Sky Sports Italia champions the inference that Sarri has set the ball in motion, with regards to his imminent departure, by informing Marina Granovskaia of his decision who, in turn, has promised to discuss Sarri’s future with Roman Abramovich.

Our third report, courtesy of the news vehicle, the Guardian carries a slightly different scenario Implying that Chelsea have not been officially approached by Juventus yet and if they do agree to release Sarri then Juventus will need to pay off the remainder of his £5 million-a-season contract.

The splendid success on Wednesday evening was Sarri’s first piece of silverware as a manager and was just reward for operating in difficult circumstances with the support not fully welcoming his style of football.

But, if Sarri is to bow out after just one season, the statistics show he’s done remarkably well, taking Chelsea to third place in the Premier League (and subsequently qualifying for the Champions League next season), winning the Europa League and also only losing the League Cup Final on penalties to Manchester City.

Whoever is asked to step into his shoes has a hard act to follow, in fact, given the fact that Sarri has done so well, I’m half inclined to want him to stay for another season, even if it does mean eating a huge slice of humble pie.

But how do you see this one panning out?
