It?s been a strange start to the campaign for the first signing made under the Abramovich regime, Glen Johnson. Touted as a future star the young defender has seen his career hit the proverbial brick wall this season. After showing so much promise during the early stages of his career under the guidance of Claudio Ranieri, the former West Ham United player is fast approaching a critical stage in his professional life.

Already this season he has apparently fallen foul of those that run the international scene with Peter Taylor seemingly sending him back to Chelsea because his attitude wasn?t all what it apparently should be. Since then Glen has picked up a hand injury, caused, if we are to believe the press, by punching a wall.

Meanwhile, stories circulate that Johnson could be the first sacrifice in the January transfer window. Likely destinations already mentioned being Athletic Bilbao or his original club West Ham United. With regard to the Athletic Bilbao rumour, it would appear that this is unlikely to happen. Athletic Bilbao are a club that would normally only employ a player who comes from the Basque region. Unless London has been relocated, this would appear to be merely an idle rumour circulating. Especially considering the current manager, Javier Clemente, is more Basque than anybody.

Indeed, if you delve back into history, Bixente Lizarazu is the only player that came to Athletic Bilbao from abroad. Even then he had the distinction of coming from the French Basque country. Therefore if Glen is to be moved on, West Ham United may be a viable option, probably on loan.

However, I?m probably not alone in hoping that Glen still has the gumption to turn around his Chelsea career and get back to the giddy heights of playing for England alongside fellow Chelsea legends, John Terry, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole. Time is most definitely on his side. Have a quiet word with him Mr Mourinho!
