They say that as you row older time seems to pass quicker.

It`s something that I can certainly vouch for.

My own children are now mature adults and I wonder where all the years went.

But another example of how time flies is that today is a very sad anniversary.

It is, unbelievably, 21 years since Matthew Harding was tragically killed in a helicopter clash.

Harding, who had blue blood running through his veins, was travelling back from a League Cup tie against Bolton Wanderers when the helicopter he was travelling came down in a wooded area in Cheshire.

I can still vividly remember waking up the following morning, oblivious to what had happened, switching on the television and hearing the dreadful news.

It left me and thousands of Chelsea supporters around the globe stunned.

Harding had become involved in the club after answering an advert in the press. His wealth helped to turn the club into what it is today with the North Stand now carrying his name in his memory.

Since Matthew died the club has come on leaps and bounds and I`d like to hope that Matthew has been looking down and see all those wonderful trophies being won.

Matthew was no ordinary director, he used to jump up and down in the director`s box, breaking all etiquette, when Chelsea scored, I can`t imagine how he`d have reacted to that magical moment when Didier Drogba`s penalty, in the shoot-out in Munich, won Chelsea the Champions League.

Tonight, I intend to raise a glass of Guinness, Matthew`s favourite tipple, in his memory.

Matthew Harding RIP – Gone but NEVER forgotten.
