Modric – Time for us to walk away?

If there is one thing Chelsea do well its drag out a transfer deal and unfortunately they rarely end successfully.

We all remember the printed shirt fiasco with Robinho, before watching him join Man City at the very last minute (bad times). Then go back a year or two earlier and we have that Danny Alves transfer from Seville which must have gone on for the whole window before he ended up staying put.

So the summer of 2011 is all about Luka Modric and his desire to quit the stepping stone that is Tottenham and join a ‘big club’.

I think it’s pretty normal for a player who tastes the good life of Europe to dream of doing it consistently while adding some domestic trophies to his belt, and that’s the situation we have here.

However, this is now starting to get silly and I think we’d do well to just walk away now and look at alternative options.

Firstly, it’s pretty clear that Tottenham don’t want to sell him and IF they do it is going to be somewhere in the region of £45-£50m and we are all know that deep down.

That’s not to say he is worth anything close to that figure and I think our latest offer of £27m is pretty much market value give or take £3m.

Who on this board can honestly say they expect to see an article tomorrow saying

‘Chelsea agree £30m fee for Luka Modric’?

We need someone now, someone who can get as much pre-season with AVB and the boys as possible and not risk ending up with nothing come the start of the season.

That is exactly what happened with Robinho, we only had eyes for him and when it fell through we had a massive gap missing in the team. We all know the type of players we need to bring in and I just hope that we have some solid back up plans in place already for this possibility.

You are dealing with a club that think they are big players in the PL and are clinging onto their one season of success (well by their low standards) by their finger nails.

There is no point in pushing the issue and I think it’s time for a take it or leave it offer of £30m. Once rejected we announce we’re moving on to other targets and draw a line under it.

I would love to see this lad in a Chelsea shirt and think its great we’ve identified the right kind of player but it can’t be at any costs and we have to learn to walk away from time to time….
