Following the spirited effort from the boys in securing a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has warned all and sundry not to expect too many pretty performances from Chelsea in the coming weeks as he seeks to steer the champions from their torrid start to the season.

The hard-fought win, just our third in nine games so far this term, came on the back of a home defeat to Southampton just a fortnight ago which prompted a vote of confidence in the first team manager – Roman Abramovich’s first in his 12-year trigger-happy ownership of the club – in a move that proved beyond all reasonable doubt that world football’s best owner has indeed all but turned a new leaf.

After the match which saw last year’s best player in the country Eden Hazard start from the bench, a visibly relieved Mourinho, like a gift that keeps on giving, got rambling away:

“In this moment it’s difficult to be brilliant before we have points,” the self-styled Special One said.

“When you are not able to show your quality, you have always to be able to show the other things.

“In between quality in some moments and fantastic work by the team and the fantastic desire to win the game, the performance was solid, not brilliant.

“They wanted to win, they wanted to show that they wanted to win, they wanted to show they are together and ready to fight.

“I’m really happy because it was two long weeks after the last defeat.”

Ahem! Did I hear you say Jose has a little bit of Brendan Rodgers in him?
