Ray Wilkins talks football…

It was our privilege at AskFans recently to get to interview a true legend – ex-Chelsea, Manchester United and England superstar Ray ‘Butch’ Wilkins. For our younger viewers, Ray was the ‘hod carrier with benefits’ in the successful 1980s Manchester United side alongside the more dynamic Bryan Robson, and he enjoyed a superb youth career at Chelsea too.

In our exclusive chat, Ray had some controversial opinions about Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil, claiming that Ozil should only start Arsenal’s home games and not start away from the Emirates. “When you go away you need to fight as eleven, you can’t fight as ten,” said Ray, giving his opinion that despite Ozil’s qualities, he doesn’t fight enough for the team

Next Ray spoke about Chelsea’s recalcitrant want-away striker Diego Costa, who refused to return from Brazil after the summer and now stands in limbo, awaiting his January 2018 move back to Athletico Madrid. ‘Butch’ said that if he was still connected in an official capacity to Chelsea he’d be over in Brazil manhandling Costa back to London.

When talking about the current Chelsea squad, Ray was pretty cutting about Sideshow Bob look-a-like David Luiz, saying he is comfortable when the Brazilian is in midfield for his old team, but not in the centre of defence. He was also disappointed with Antonio Conte’s decision to let Nemanja Matic leave the club to be re-united with former boss Jose Mourinho at Manchester United. Coincidentally, Wilkins was a coach at the club when Matic was allowed to leave Chelsea before, when he signed for Benfica after just two games in seventeen months.

In the interview Ray also speaks about his time at Milan and Rangers, and answers the question of whom was the best coach he ever worked under. You can see the full interview right now at the AskFans website’.
