Swap Eidur for Ludovik Giuly?

Yesterday we reported that Barça was considering Eidur Gudjohnson, as a replacement for Henrik Larrson. Today, Eidur?s father reveals that his son wouldn?t mind such a move.

Arnor Gudjohnsen, Eidur?s father, was contacted by Radio Barcelona, and the Icelandic national team captain?s old man was quite clear that Barça would be a good destination for his son. ?The only thing I can say is that he would like to leave Chelsea, he wants to go to a club where he can win titles, and Barça could be that club?. None of that constitutes big news or a controversial view.

As if that wasn?t enough, the Catalan sports daily ?El Mundo Deportivo? quotes a certain Peter Harrison, who used to be Gudjohnsen?s manager. According to Mr Harrison, Chelsea could be thinking about a swap deal between Gudjohnsen and French winger Ludovik Giuly, a player that José Mourinho is said to covet. However as the newspaper also points out, Barça intend to renew Giuly?s contract, possibly no later than next week, and those negotiations are said to be close to finalising.

We have to say that we are merely reporting what is being said elsewhere. We don?t buy the development of this rumour. Firstly, frankly, the fact that Eidur?s father says that his son is looking to move on (which is no great secret) doesn?t necessarily place him in Barcelona. For, whilst we can understand that Barça value greatly Gudjohnsen?s adaptability (as a striker or a midfielder), in other news in the Spanish press, it is clear that, as far as replacing Henrik Larsson goes, the first choice for such a replacement is Villarreal?s Diego Forlán. The reports are that negotiations with Forlán have already begun.

We?ll pass up the suggestions that José would never sanction a sale of a Chelsea player to Barça: given Eidur?s service to the club, José is unlikely to stand in the way of the sale of a player whose future at Chelsea is not rosy.

The idea, however, that Chelsea would like a swap with Ludovik Giuly (suggested by ? an ex-agent of Gudjohnsen) seems also rather far-fetched. If we wanted a pacy, pint-sized winger who plays on the right, don?t we already have one on our books by the name of Shaun Wright-Phillips?
